Boss's Behavior on 9/11

Boss was out of the office on 9/11 and called in shortly after the second plane hit and asked for someone, he wasn't at his desk. Asked for another person, not at his desk either. Repeated the process a few more times and was then told everyone was next door watching the events unfold on a big screen TV. Boss made secretary go around and make a list of everyone who wasn't at their desk and then go next door and tell everyone they better get back to their desks or else. I finished out the year before heading to greener pastures.

Did anybody tell him what was happening? If he knew and still did what he did then he’s a complete asshole.

Yes, that was heartless, but I would hope there’s more to the story.

Sound like a micro-mgmt. freak that can’t even see the little picture, as opposed to the big picture we expect our fearless leaders to see. Have a chat with him out in the parking lot! Works every time.

he probably would have let anybody who had to leave due to family emergency go. he perhaps did not want to encourage a state of panic, as he wasn’t entirely sure what was occurring. when i was told i was in NY, shamefully enough i laughed, wasn’t sure what dude was saying on IRC. do what now, sir?

then “wait, what? oh SH**”.

watched smoke roll over in the sky some miles away from the site. people might have flipped out and rioted, you know how some people are ; p

i hope there’s more to that story though like did he make you stay all day long and pretend nothing happened, did he ever make an announcement?

wrote a book there sorry. first post.

I posted this story and, yes, the boss was aware of what was happening, but that was in New York and we are in a Midwestern state so he didn’t see why that should be an excuse for not working.

I had a boss that wrote me up for making a payroll error on 9-11. It amounted to $5.46 and I had had a year with no errors

To be quite honest I think his reaction had more to do with his imsecurity and incompetence in managing you guys and your reactions effectively there than anything wrong you were doing. 9/11 was MAJOR! I am from Liverpool, UK and feel sick just thinking about it even now! I wasn’t at work the time it happened but my neighbour at the time called me in and we were both watching it on TV. It was 2pm in England. It was just so awful and unbelievable – even thousands of miles away here in England we were all gathered round the TV; families, friends, neighbours, workers. Millions of people in many countries across the world can say exactly where they were when 9/11 happened. So yes, totally to do with your boss’ inadequacy than your behaviour!
