Call me SIR!!! and get that top button fastened.

I'm a personal assistant to the General Manager of our company. I've worked in our office for seven years and recently got a new boss. Our office has always had a fairly relaxed dress code until this guy came. The first day I met him he asked me why I wasn't wearing a suit and tie, I was then sent home to change. Everybody in the office was giving me strange looks, asking me why I was wearing this get up. The boss came out to check what was going on. I addressed him as Paul and he went ballistic and demanded that I call him sir! He then yanked at my collar and asked why my top button wasn't done up. He proceeded to fasten it up and tighten my tie, in front of everybody, before giving me a list of menial jobs to tackle

They had no right to put his hands on you! I there was an issue with your attire a meeting should have been held to address the new 'dress-code' policy and the effective date or you should have been told in private setting. Furthermore, whenever a new person comes into a working environment, even in a position of authority, they need to clearly analyze the office 'culture' and see how THEY fit into it, not the other way around. When it was requested that you go home you could have asked to stay home with a day of pay since it was no fault of your own that your attire was not up to snuff since it always was before. Furthermore, no on has a right to touch your clothing, face, or body in any way that is uncomfortable in the working environment. As for the 'collar and button' fiasco I would have slapped those hands away and firmly said: "If there is a problem with my attire feel free to take it up with HR"...(but then again I have no patience for power-trippin' managers)..hang in there, hopefully the higher-ups will see right through this wacko and give them the boot!

Sounds like your boss has a bit of a collar and tie fetish. I work for a guy who insists I wear a tie with my top button fastened. He regularly straightens my tie and gives me crap jobs to do like cleaning his car!

I think you've got yourself a clear "improper behaviour" situation. He has no right to touch you, and what he did was clearly humiliating. You have all the right to feel threaten and molested by his behaviour. And you know what else? All these happened in front of a lot of witneses, so if you go with all this info to HW, I guess you have a one-way ticket to transfer-me-land!

I have a similar boss- have to wear a suit and tie every single day- with the top button fastened, and tie knot snug to my neck. No tie loosening or jacket removal permitted for me, get hot and stuffy in the summer too!

It is possible to have your top button undone and still look smart - it really depends on making sure you have the right knot in your tie - somnethinh fairly largish usually works best. Don't be intimidated by this guy.
